About
About Me
Hi! I’m Julian, a funk-drumming, gospel-humming, barbershop-loving vocal coach and musician. I have worked, trained and taken courses with world-class voice pedagogues and coaches, vocal health experts and manual therapists - and lovely human beings - including Stephen King, Dr Jenevora Williams, Walt Fritz PT, Dr Ian Howell, Ken Bozeman, Kerrie Obert SLP, Dr Ingo Titze, Steve Scott and Rob Mance.
I am a qualified Vocal Health First Aider, training as a Vocal Habilitation Professional, certified in Vocal Massage Therapy and Laryngeal Manipulation, consult for the UK’s premier vocal health organisation Vocal Health Education, and am part of the founding team of New Voice Publishing, giving a platform to emerging and established authors in the fields of voice, psychology and therapy.
Coaching Style
All voices
I work with and celebrate all adult voices - all styles, standards and genders. From struggling with vocal health and voice dysphoria, to the next step in your professional vocal career, I’d love to be a part of your journey.
Passion
I love it when someone opens their mouth and their soul comes out. That emotional connection is what brought me to music.
+ Technique
We can make small changes to bits of a song, or we can improve the whole song by working the underlying skills. I love nailing the technique so we can focus on the emotion.
+ Authenticity
There is no ‘right’ way to sing or speak. I work collaboratively with you to help you coordinate your body and mind so you can express yourself in the way that works for you.
Passion + Technique + Authenticity
That magic spot where technique and craft merge with expression and joy. “Think hard, feel deeply, dream big, and be great” - Eric Maisel.
Alignment
I find alignment such a useful framework to hang things off. Helping the whole system to be as efficient as possible, releasing tension, getting out of our own way. I work hands-on where that is comfortable for you so we tend to work a cappella or with backing tracks.
Biopsychosocial / Vocal Health
A long word that essentially means it’s all connected, our voice doesn't exist in isolation lurking in our larynx. What we think and feel affects our voice just as much as the physical, so we work to align, build and strengthen body, mind and voice.
Ensemble / Choral Process
When every singer gets a little bit better, the whole group gets a lot better. I love to enable singers and the music team by coaching in partnership with the musical director - it helps connect useful new ideas to established techniques and results in greater retention.
I specialise in individual and ensemble vocal technique, rehearsal and practice techniques and learning methods, and can assist on music, conducting and directing technique, from experienced MDs to occasional hand wavers.
Sessions
Initial Session
In our initial session we’ll usually explore what you’re looking for and how I can help, and see if it would be a rewarding fit going forwards - important both ways!
Regular Sessions
I love fortnightly 2 hour sessions for individuals, though weekly 1 hour sessions can also work well. Longer, more spaced sessions give us more time to explore together, and more time for you to process, practice and embed between sessions.
Irregular Sessions
Regular can work well, but sometimes life doesn’t go that way, or you’re just looking for help on a particular song, skill, audition or issue, or prefer a more occasional intensive “tune up” session - it’s all good.
